On a geographic analysis, Egypt has five of the 20 largest planned schemes, followed by three each for Nigeria and Tanzania and two each for South Africa and Democratic Republic of Congo. The other projects are spread across the continent, from Algeria in the north, to Cameroon in the center, Ethiopia in the east, Guinea/Mali in the west and Namibia in the south. Among the 20 biggest schemes in the pipeline, four are at the design stage and the rest are at the study stage.

African economies and projects rely on a range of funding sources, from governments’ domestic revenue-raising programmes to official development assistance (ODA), remittances and export credit finance. According to the African Development Bank (AfDB), financial inflows into the continent were significantly disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Foreign direct investment (FDI), portfolio investments, remittances and ODA all declined from 2019 to 2020.
