Africa Energy Transition Market Report Overview
Africa is set to experience significant social, economic, and environmental changes that will heavily influence the region’s energy demand in the coming years. The power market in Africa still heavily relies on a combination of thermal power and large-scale hydropower projects to meet its power demand. However, the region’s energy transition is gaining pace as countries increasingly capitalize on the falling cost of producing renewable energy and the region’s rich renewable resources, which is facilitating other technologies such as green hydrogen.
The Africa energy transition market research report analyzes the region’s energy transition to renewable energy sources from a fossil fuel-dominated market into a sustainable energy-producing region.

Africa Energy Transition Market Segmentation by Sectors
Renewable Energy: While Africa’s overall power generation is currently dominated by thermal power plants, a moderate increase in renewable power generation is expected by 2030. For instance, Zambia, the DRC, and Uganda obtain at least 90% of their power from hydro. As a result, hydropower will remain the dominant renewable technology through 2034.
Many African countries are working to bring grid access to all segments of the population. A few African countries have also started setting renewable energy targets as prices begin to compete with fossil fuels.
Additionally, large buildouts of renewable energy capacity in the region will result in a steep increase in renewable generation. For instance, Morocco, South Africa, and Tanzania will experience some of the strongest growth in renewable generation between 2022 and 2035, primarily due to the build-out of large-scale solar PV and wind projects.
Electric Vehicles: Africa contributes to a very low proportion of global sales of light vehicles owing to low vehicle ownership and dispensable income in some countries within the region. Moreover, convenient, and reliable access to electricity for charging represents a major barrier to EV adoption in the region. Despite the barriers to adopting light EVs, electric micro-mobility and public transport solutions are an important opportunity within the region.
CCS/CCUS: CCS / CCU remains a nascent technology within Africa. The emerging nature of this technology and high upfront investment act as a barrier to this technology’s traction across the region. However, there has been a significant uptick in activity related to carbon capture, storage, and utilization technology, with 6 projects scheduled to come online before 2030, the majority of which will be commercial projects.
Hydrogen: Africa has gained attention as a potential powerhouse for green hydrogen production due to abundant renewable resources and proximity to the European market which is experiencing a rapid growth in demand. Mauritania, Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria have a large pipeline of green hydrogen projects.
