Report 1: High Intensity Warfare (HIW) / High Intensity Conflict (HIC)

The concept of high intensity warfare (HIW) entails geopolitical and socio-economic turmoil on such a scale that all areas of global trade are at risk of feeling the detrimental impacts of such a conflict. There is also an issue of scale, as a HIW scenario has the potential to remain geographically limited in its immediate scope, as seen with the brief conflicts in Georgia in 2008 or Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020, while also having the potential to gradually escalate into an armed conflict on a larger scale, as we are noticing in the Russian invasion of Ukraine in Europe. It is, for this reason, that understanding the HIW theme is critical to anticipating the immediate impacts of a conflict for both clients and suppliers within the global defense market. Companies with a seemingly niche product portfolio or expertise can see significant shifts in demand and return on investment as factions engaged in high intensity warfare develop creative means of deploying those solutions in new domains or scenarios. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has provided several stark examples of this, including the use of Bayraktar TB-2 UCAVs to hunt surface vessels or the adaptation of the fighter-launched Brimstone Air-to-Surface Missile (ASM) to function as a Surface-to-Surface Missile (SSM) fired from makeshift platforms.

Report 2:  Electric Aircraft in Aerospace and Defense

Improvements in battery technology have historically led to developments in electric aircraft technology, but the specific energy offered by batteries has always fallen below the required levels. In the mid-20th century, the development of nickel-cadmium batteries allowed for the first full-sized, manned fixed-wing flight in 1973. However, the MB-E1, which was propelled by an 8-10 kilowatt (kW) (11-13 horsepower) Bosch KM77 electric motor, was only capable of a 12-minute flight up to an altitude of 1247ft due to the limited capacity of its batteries. Technological advances in recent years have made the development of electric aircraft increasingly viable. Lithium-ion batteries may be able to offer a great enough specific energy to allow electric aircraft to compete with conventionally powered aircraft in some sectors. NASA anticipates that in the near/mid-term, the potential of electric aircraft for large commercial aviation lies with hybrid-electric propulsion due to the limitations of contemporary batteries. These aircraft aim to perform a new role within commercial aerospace as Urban Air Taxis, carrying a small number of passengers on many very short distances within cities and suburbs.

Report 3:  Hydrogen Aircraft (Market Size, Advancements and Key Programs)

To facilitate the development of hydrogen aircraft, investment in key technologies ranging from fuselages to hydrogen fuel cells will need to be revamped. Several companies are investing in this space but more research is needed to achieve the efficacy needed to enable widespread commercial aviation powered by hydrogen. There is a mainstream investment in the development of passenger aircraft for the commercial market on this technology and manufacturers including Airbus are working on it. Whilst the technology is mostly in the concept phase, steps are being taken to advance the specific technologies which will facilitate commercial use in the future.

Report 4:  Space Systems in Aerospace and Defense

The use of space-based assets has been an option for the last 60 years, with its genesis rooted in the Cold War tensions between the US and the Soviet Union (USSR). However, recent convergent trends are serving to reduce the financial burden of operating space systems, whilst simultaneously the capabilities of space systems advance at pace. The commercialization of space is a key driver in the contemporary space systems market, with technological advances not only improving the capabilities of satellites but reducing costs throughout the supply chain. Increasingly powerful smallsats, in conjunction with retrievable and reusable launch vehicles, will mean that the global space commons are likely to be dominated by massive commercial constellations, such as SpaceX’s Starlink and Amazon’s Kuiper constellations. However, this commercialization will bring benefits to defense space systems, as costs will reduce, and capabilities increase. Likely, space will increasingly become a theatre in which peer adversary contests are fought. For example, the Space Based Space Surveillance (SBSS) program is a planned future constellation of satellites and supporting ground infrastructure of the US DOD to track space objects in orbit and to accomplish space situational awareness for future space control operations.

Report 5:  High Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS)

High-altitude platform systems (HAPS) are autonomous aerial vehicles that fly at very high altitudes in the stratosphere. There are three types of vehicles that together comprise the HAPS currently under development. These are aerostatic balloons, aerostatic airships, and aerodynamic fixed-wing aircraft. The platforms are commonly composed of airframes, power systems, and various payloads, dependent on the intended mission. In commercial applications, one of the most promising value propositions is the use of HAPS to provide communications. Companies such as SoftBank are actively exploring the use of HAPS to increase connectivity in urban areas with a view toward 6G requirements. In defense applications, HAPS are being developed to provide a persistent, yet flexible ISR capability. Many of the major HAPS programs under development rely upon solar energy to power the platform. The primary benefit this brings is persistence, allowing the platform to remain on the station for long periods without refueling.

Report 6:  Hypersonic Technologies (Defense)

Hypersonic technology has a long history, stretching back more than half a century but has waxed and waned over the years. Recently, increasing multi-polarity (and certainly the war in Ukraine) have driven intense investment in hypersonic technology by countries such as Russia, China, and the US. Hypersonic refers to aerial projectiles (aircraft, missiles, rockets, and spacecraft) that can reach speeds through the atmosphere greater than Mach 5, which is nearly 4,000 miles per hour (6437 km/h). The Mach number indicates how many times the speed of sound an object is traveling. As objects travel faster, technical challenges such as atmospheric heating increase exponentially, a paradigm that has historically limited designers. Although, in the next decade, the missiles segment will be driven by multiple high-value procurement programs worldwide, including the AGM-181 LRSO, Next-Generation Interceptor (NGI), Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD), and Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3) by the US, Kh-95 and Kh-47M2 Khinzhal by Russia, Dong Feng-21 by China, and AGM-88 HARM by Saudi Arabia, among others.

“The GlobalData platform is our go-to tool for intelligence services. GlobalData provides an easy way to access comprehensive intelligence data around multiple sectors, which essentially makes it a one-for-all intelligence platform, for tendering and approaching customers.

GlobalData is very customer orientated, with a high degree of personalised services, which benefits everyday use. The highly detailed project intelligence and forecast reports can be utilised across multiple departments and workflow scopes, from operational to strategic level, and often support strategic decisions. GlobalData Analytics and visualisation solutions has contributed positively when preparing management presentations and strategic papers.”

Business Intelligence & Marketing Manager, SAL Heavy Lift

“COVID-19 has caused significant interference to our business and the COVID-19 intelligence from GlobalData has helped us reach better decisions around strategy. These two highlights have helped enormously to understand the projections into the future concerning our business units, we also utilise the project database to source new projects for Liebherr-Werk to use as an additional source to pitch for new business.”

Market Analyst & Management, Liebherr-Werk

Your daily news has saved me a lot of time and keeps me up-to-date with what is happening in the market, I like that you almost always have a link to the source origin. We also use your market data in our Strategic Business Process to support our business decisions. By having everything in one place on the Intelligence Center it has saved me a lot of time versus looking on different sources, the alert function also helps with this.

Head of Key Accounts, Saab AB

Having used several other market research companies, I find that GlobalData manages to provide that ‘difficult-to-get’ market data that others can’t, as well as very diverse and complete consumer surveys.

Marketing Intelligence Manager, Portugal Foods

Our experience with GlobalData has been very good, from the platform itself to the people. I find that the analysts and the account team have a high level of customer focus and responsiveness and therefore I can always rely on. The platform is more holistic than other providers. It is convenient and almost like a one stop shop. The pricing suite is highly competitive and value for our organisation.

I like reports that inform new segments such as the analysis on generation Z, millennials, the impact of COVID 19 to our banking customers and their new channel habits. Secondly the specialist insight on affluent sector significantly increases our understanding about this group of customers. The combination of those give us depth and breadth of the evolving market.

I’m in the business of answering and helping people make decisions so with the intelligence center I can do that, effectively and efficiently. I can share quickly key insights that answer and satisfy our country stakeholders by giving them many quality studies and primary research about competitive landscape beyond the outlook of our bank. It helps me be seen as an advisory partner and that makes a big difference. A big benefit of our subscription is that no one holds the whole data and because it allows so many people, so many different parts of our organisation have access, it enables all teams to have the same level of knowledge and decision support.

Head of Customer Insight and Research, Standard Chartered

“I know that I can always rely on Globaldata’s work when I’m searching for the right consumer and market insights. I use Globaldata insights to understand the changing market & consumer landscape and help create better taste & wellbeing solutions for our customers in food, beverage and healthcare industries.

Globaldata has the right data and the reports are of very high quality compared to your competitors. Globaldata not only has overall market sizes & consumer insights on food & beverages but also provides insights at the ingredient & flavour level. That is key for B2B companies like Givaudan. This way we understand our customers’ business and also gain insight to our unique industry”

Head of Consumer Sensory Insights, Givaudan

GlobalData provides a great range of information and reports on various sectors that is highly relevant, timely, easy to access and utilise.  The reports and data dashboards help engagement with clients; they provide valuable industry and market insights that can enrich client conversations and can help in the shaping of value propositions. Moreover, using GlobalData products has helped increase my knowledge of the finance sector, the players within it, and the general threats and opportunities.

I find the consumer surveys that are carried out to be extremely beneficial and not something I have seen anywhere else. They provided an insightful view of why and which consumers take (or don’t) particular financial products. This can help shape conversations with clients to ensure they make the right strategic decisions for their business.

One of the challenges I have found is that data in the payments space is often piecemeal. With GD all of the data I need is in one place, but it also comes with additional market reports that provide useful extra context and information. Having the ability to set-up alerts on relevant movements in the industry, be it competitors or customers, and have them emailed directly to me, ensures I get early sight of industry activity and don’t have to search for news.

Senior Account Manager, TSYS
