Automotive 4 Wheel-Drive (4WD) and All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Market and Trend Analysis by Technology, Key Companies and Forecast, 2021-2036

This report provides a comprehensive overview of the global 4WD (Four Wheel Drive) and AWD (All Wheel Drive) sector, major suppliers, top 14 markets, technology trends and market size forecasts.

What are the market dynamics of the automotive 4WD and AWD market?

Technology developments in AWD/4WD drivetrains must add to the feeling of safety, performance, and assurance that customers typically cite as key purchase motivators. Torque vectoring is a contributory technology in maintaining reality. It is a relatively recent function introduced to differentials and powertrain systems that allows power to be precisely distributed from axle to axle or wheel to wheel.

The growing popularity of AWD and 4WD vehicles presents a big technology opportunity to suppliers, but something of a headache to OEMs needing to comply with tightening CO2 and fuel economy regulations. All the leading AWD/4WD players have demonstrated driveline disconnect technology. The driveline disconnect addresses AWD systems’ inherent fuel economy disadvantage when compared with 2WD systems, by decoupling the AWD system and operating in 2WD mode when full traction is not deemed necessary.

What are the key segments in the automotive 4WD and AWD market?

The key segments in the automotive 4WD and AWD market are four wheel drive and all-wheel drive AWD.

4WD segment in the automotive 4WD and AWD market

Models using 4WD almost always feature a longitudinally mounted engine, sending power through a transmission into a transfer case. The transfer case will commonly send the power onto the rear axle in 2WD mode but, when 4WD is requested by the driver or drivetrain, the center differential will lock the front prop shaft and send power to the front axle. In addition, many 4WD transfer cases include a geared low-range mode for greater traction on slippery surfaces.

Modern 4WD systems in longitudinal-engine vehicles such as Audi’s Quattro, BMW’s xDrive, and Mercedes’ 4matic allow 4WD use on-road by including a center differential to enable both axles to receive power but spin at different speeds.

This approach is commonly favored for its ruggedness and durability and, as such, sees regular fitment in off-road-oriented SUVs and pickup trucks. However, the greater number of moving parts, along with the higher system weight and friction means vehicles using four-wheel-drive systems typically return worse economy and emissions performance than their 2WD counterparts.

AWD segment in the automotive 4WD and AWD market

AWD models have become more common on smaller, more affordable models and especially those that are based on front-wheel-drive vehicles. Here the engine is almost always mounted transversely and sends its power to the front wheels via a transaxle. A PTU is mounted either on or within the transaxle and splits the engine’s power to the rear axle via a prop shaft. An automated coupling joins the end of the prop shaft to the rear axle and allows for varying torque splits by modulating the amount of lockup – usually via a clutch pack – to progressively engage or disengage the rear axle.

This approach offers the grip benefits of four-wheel-drive systems but, with the ability to automatically disconnect the system when more grips are not needed. It can also return fuel economy and emissions performance close to an equivalent 2WD car. As a downside, this approach is less appropriate for true off-road vehicles due to the risk that the PTU clutch pack can overheat with intensive use.
