According to GlobalData research, Swedish people perceive life insurance both as savings and a means of financial aid in adverse situations. Swedish households’ investments in life insurance (including occupational pensions) accounted for 44% of total savings in 2014. The total investment asset of insurance companies operating in Sweden was equivalent to 99% of Sweden’s GDP, and 73% of the Stockholm stock exchange. Of this, life insurance companies accounted for 86% of investment assets.

The persistent low interest rate and decreases in investment opportunities adversely affected the investment income of life insurers, which declined at an annual rate of -102.9% from 2010 to 2011. As a result, life insurers increased their investment in investment funds to compensate for long-term liabilities. Insurers’ investment income grew at a CAGR of 32.5% from 2012 to 2014, to value SEK324.8 billion (US$47.3 billion) in 2014. Overall, the total investment income of the Swedish life segment grew from SEK161.1 billion (US$22.3 billion) in 2010 to SEK324.8 billion (US$47.3 billion) in 2014, at a review period (2010 to 2014) CAGR of 19.2%. Swedish life insurers generated positive returns on investments in the capital market in 2014. Alecta Insurance, for example, had returns on investment in its Alecta Optimal Pension, and its defined-benefit pension product, of 14.9% and 12.8% respectively that year.

The Swedish life gross written premium grew at a CAGR of 2.8% during the review period to value SEK233.4 billion (US$34.0 billion). The segment’s penetration was 6.0% in 2014; its growth can be accredited to factors such as rises in GDP, annual disposable income, life expectancy, as well as demand for endowment and pension products.
