Graphite Mining Market Overview

The global graphite production was estimated at 1,202.6 thousand tonnes (kt) in 2022 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 4% from 2023 to 2026. The increased graphite production will be supported mainly by the increased output from Mozambique, Madagascar and Brazil due to the commencement of Montepuez Central Graphite project (50ktpa) in Mozambique, Molo Graphite project (17ktpa) in Madagascar and Santa Cruz Graphite project (25ktpa) in Brazil.

In terms of reserves, the global natural graphite reserves stood at 330 million tonnes (Mt) as of January 2023. Of this, Turkey, China, Brazil, Madagascar, and Mozambique were the top five countries, accounting for a collective 267Mt. Of the remainder, Tanzania and India accounted for a collective 63Mt of natural graphite reserves.

The graphite industry is expected to experience significant growth in the upcoming years, as the booming electric vehicle (EV) market is expected to substantially increase demand for graphite. Production of battery EVs grew by 70% in 2022 compared with the previous year, reaching 7.8 million units. This growth is impressive considering the general declines in vehicle sales and production due to COVID-19 and the associated chip shortage. The single largest BEV manufacturer in 2022 was Tesla, with 1.4 million units of production.

Batteries account for 30% to 40% of the value of EVs. China is the largest producers of EV batteries made from lithium, cobalt as well as graphite. Six battery manufacturers will dominate the market in the mid-term—CATL, BYD, LG Energy Solution, Panasonic, Samsung SDI, and SK Innovation. They control nearly 90% of global production and are forming close ties with the largest auto companies which are becoming progressively more vertically integrated structurally. They already have long-established ties with major consumer electronics companies, led by Apple, which have driven the battery industry until now.
