Malaysia Power Market Dynamics
Solar PV, biopower, and small hydro are the only three renewable sources utilized by the country. In 2015, Malaysia took a step towards exploring geothermal power by launching the 30 MW Tawau project but was later abandoned by the government. The country presently does not have any nuclear capacity and in September 2018, the prime minister announced that they have no plans to pursue nuclear power in the country owing to the risks associated with it. Malaysia has not yet explored any of its wind or geothermal potential, and these unexploited resources can play a significant role in the country’s future renewable energy mix.
For the last few years, the country has been stepping towards green technology to achieve sustainable development. To attract more new entrants in renewable energy the country released the Renewable Energy Act 2011 which established a platform of feed-in-tariffs (FiTs) for renewable energy sources. The Renewable Energy Act was amended in 2014, 2015, and lately in 2019. The latest addition to the regulation was in January 2019 which introduced the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme to further boost renewable energy development in the country.
