North America Energy Transition Market Analysis by Sectors (Power, Electric Mobility, Renewable Fuels, Hydrogen and CCS/CCU) and Trends
The energy transition in North America is gaining momentum due to the global momentum behind the sector and the Biden administration’s support. Recent laws such as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Inflation Reduction Act, and other initiatives are significantly investing in the sector and reduce the premium on lesser developed technologies such as green hydrogen and carbon capture.
Furthermore, coal power generation is set to decrease by 2030, with solar PV largely coming in as a replacement, followed by wind. Gas will remain an important baseload power source throughout that period.
North America Energy Transition Market Segmentation by Power Types
The key power types in the North America energy transition market are coal, oil, gas, nuclear, hydro, wind (onshore and offshore), solar PV, solar thermal, geothermal, and biopower. North America’s power mix is dominated by gas and will witness a net increase during the forecast period, however it’s share of overall capacity is expected to decrease. Coal capacity is expected to decrease by more than one third during the forecast period. Additionally, offshore wind is expected to have the largest percentage increase during the forecast period.

North America Energy Transition Market Segmentation by Countries
The US is expected to see the largest renewable energy buildout in North America, followed by Canada and Mexico. In the United States, overall generation from renewables is expected to double between 2021-2035. In Canada, hydropower is by far the largest power generation source and will continue to be so through 2035. Mexico’s renewable generation derives mainly from a combination of hydropower, solar PV, and onshore wind.

North America Energy Transition Market Segmentation by Sectors
The key sectors in the North America energy transition market are renewable energy, electric vehicles, renewable fuels, CCS/CCU, and hydrogen.
Renewable Fuels: Biodiesel demand in North America is expected to increase significantly in both the US and Canada, while US ethanol demand is expected to decrease. California’s Low-Carbon Fuel Standard has been a major driver of most Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) use to date, as it is eligible for credits under the system. Additional demand could be driven by other states that have or are considering similar measures, or by national mandates in the US and Canada.
CCS/CCU: By the end of 2021, total global CCS capacity was more than 40 mtpa. Mexico has had little activity, with one previous project that was decommissioned, and one new project that is currently planned. The US and Canada have increased CCUS incentives, greatly improving its economics in those countries.
Hydrogen: Many provinces in Canada have released their own hydrogen plans, in addition to the national strategy. The Canadian government signed a MOU with the Dutch government to cooperate in developing a clean hydrogen economy . The new investment tax credit would be available for a broad range of CCUS applications across different industrial subsectors.
