North America Energy Transition Market, Major Sectors
Renewable Energy: Renewables are set to play an increasingly large role in North America’s power generation market, as countries in the region progress towards aspiring decarbonization targets. While hydropower is currently the largest renewable energy source in North America, solar PV will experience the strongest growth between 2023 and 2035, followed by wind power. The robust growth of these specific technologies will boost the power capacity share of renewables to around 65% in 2035.
Additionally, North America is expected to decommission a significant volume of thermal power between 2023 and 2035, which will stabilize the region’s emissions from thermal power generation.
Electric Vehicles: A combination of government policies, tax credits, higher gasoline prices, and growing environmental consciousness among consumers will increase the demand for electric vehicles within the North American market. As a result, electric vehicles will exceed 75% of the light vehicle market in Canada and the US. Furthermore, the increasing adoption of electric vehicles among North American consumers will propel electric vehicle production to exceed 212 million by 2035.
Renewable Fuels: A combination of increasing demand and policy incentives will drive a strong growth in the production and consumption of renewable fuels in North America. The US will contribute the bulk of production capacity, followed by Canada. Moreover, advancements in renewable fuel technology and the shift to using other agricultural waste products will boost North America’s renewable fuel production by 2030, thereby creating opportunities for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS): North America is one of the world’s most active regions for carbon capture, accounting for 63% of global capacity in 2021. The US and Canada have increased CCUS incentives, greatly improving its economics in those countries.
Hydrogen: North America’s hydrogen capacity is expected to strongly increase with the announcement of two upcoming hydrogen plant projects in Canada. The region is also one of the most attractive regions for blue hydrogen due to abundant natural gas and favorable conditions for geological CO2 storage.
