NRG Acquires California Valley Solar Ranch From SunPower- A Strategic Investment for Expanding Solar PV Portfolio

NRG Energy acquires 250 MW California Valley Solar Ranch Project from SunPower.The total project cost is estimated to be $1,800m of which NRG plans to invest $450m of equity in the next four years. To finance part of the project NRG is seeking a loan guarantee from the US Department of Energy’s Loan guarantee program office for the project. In this regard, the DOE has provided a draft term sheet for the project.NRG will be the owner of the project and SunPower will be developer and operator of the project. The construction of the project will start by the middle of 2011, the first phase of the project is expected to come online by the end of 2011 and the project will be completed by 2013. The most important factor behind the acquisition of California Valley Solar Ranch is expected to be NRG’s focus on the development of a Clean Energy Portfolio.
