Hydropower will continue to lead annual generation in Switzerland till 2030

Hydropower held a share of more than 55% in Switzerland’s total generation in 2020. Although this share is expected to decline by 2030, hydropower will continue to hold the dominant share in the country’s generation mix. Switzerland is endowed with extraordinary conditions for hydropower exploitation. The country has abundant precipitation and retention through glaciers and lakes which had help the country to rapidly develop the hydropower market. The Swiss Government’s proposed Energy Strategy 2050 places emphasis on the development of hydropower plants, as nuclear energy will gradually be phased out in 2030s. However, Switzerland has already exploited most of its hydropower resources, meaning the expansion of existing power stations is the most viable future option. Existing hydropower plants are also being renovated to address ecological requirements. Pumped storage plants in the country act more as a source of reserve energy and are used primarily to cover peak demand situations. This is an attractive option for the country’s power producers, as pumped storage plants can be used to meet electricity demand in times of intermittent wind power supply.

How is Switzerland’s power market structured?

The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) is responsible for ensuring a secure and efficient power supply, promoting renewables, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions, as well as energy conservation and sustainable energy development in Switzerland. SFOE functions under the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications. The Swiss Federal Electricity Commission (ElCom) is the regulatory authority of the electricity sector, which it monitors in compliance with the Swiss Federal Electricity Act and the Swiss Federal Energy Act. It also monitors electricity prices, rules as a judicial authority on disputes over network access. It is also responsible for issues relating to international electricity transmission and trading.

Who are the key players in Switzerland’s power market?

The power generation segment is dominated by Axpo Holding AG, followed by Alpiq Holding AG, BKW AG, and Kernkraftwerk Gosgen-Daniken AG. With the liberalization of the electricity market in Switzerland, restructuring was also introduced in the electricity transmission segment. In 2005, it was decided that a neutral body should be responsible for the transmission system, and the Competition Commission approved the merger of seven electricity companies into one single authority: Swissgrid. In December 2006, Swissgrid commenced operations as a public limited company, responsible for the transmission system in Switzerland. There are around 700 Distribution System Operators (DSO) in Switzerland. These are generally electricity supply companies, tasked with ensuring a reliable power supply to their end-consumers. These DSOs include EBM Netz, Axpo, Regio Energie Solothurn, InfraWerkeMünsingen and EWZ, among others.

Where are the opportunities in Switzerland’s d power market?

There are substantial investment and growth opportunities in Switzerland’s power sector. With the government planning to phase out nuclear power in 2030s, the renewable power sector in the country is set to grow significantly in the coming years. This will present opportunities for domestic and international renewable sector companies to set up their base in the country. Rapid deployment of renewable power sources will also lead to a rise in demand for energy storage devices.

What are the challenges faced by Switzerland’s power market?

High dependence on hydropower for power generation is one of the major challenges hampering the growth of the power sector in Switzerland. The country is heavily dependent on hydropower for meeting its power needs. Hydropower accounted for a share of more than 55% in the generation mix in 2020. High dependence on a single source for power generation can hamper the country’s energy security. The country may look to expand its renewable power capacity, particularly solar PV, and wind power capacity in coming years.

How has COVID-19 affected Switzerland’s power market?

Switzerland was significantly affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. To curb the spread of COVID-19, the Swiss Government imposed strict movement and travel restrictions in the country. Majority of the sectors in the country were affected due to these lockdowns; however, tourism and hospitality sector was the most badly affected.

With respect to power sector, the electricity consumption in the country declined by more than 2% in 2020 as compared to 2019. Electricity demand from industrial and commercial sectors declined significantly due to movement and travel restrictions. The commissioning of several renewable projects in the country was delayed due to social distancing measures and supply chain disruptions. In March 2020, Pronovo AG, a subsidiary of Swissgrid responsible for promoting solar PV on a federal level, received several applications from project developers regarding delays in solar PV project commissioning.

Business Intelligence & Marketing Manager, SAL Heavy Lift

“COVID-19 has caused significant interference to our business and the COVID-19 intelligence from GlobalData has helped us reach better decisions around strategy. These two highlights have helped enormously to understand the projections into the future concerning our business units, we also utilise the project database to source new projects for Liebherr-Werk to use as an additional source to pitch for new business.”

Market Analyst & Management, Liebherr-Werk

Your daily news has saved me a lot of time and keeps me up-to-date with what is happening in the market, I like that you almost always have a link to the source origin. We also use your market data in our Strategic Business Process to support our business decisions. By having everything in one place on the Intelligence Center it has saved me a lot of time versus looking on different sources, the alert function also helps with this.

Head of Key Accounts, Saab AB

Having used several other market research companies, I find that GlobalData manages to provide that ‘difficult-to-get’ market data that others can’t, as well as very diverse and complete consumer surveys.

Marketing Intelligence Manager, Portugal Foods

Our experience with GlobalData has been very good, from the platform itself to the people. I find that the analysts and the account team have a high level of customer focus and responsiveness and therefore I can always rely on. The platform is more holistic than other providers. It is convenient and almost like a one stop shop. The pricing suite is highly competitive and value for our organisation.

I like reports that inform new segments such as the analysis on generation Z, millennials, the impact of COVID 19 to our banking customers and their new channel habits. Secondly the specialist insight on affluent sector significantly increases our understanding about this group of customers. The combination of those give us depth and breadth of the evolving market.

I’m in the business of answering and helping people make decisions so with the intelligence center I can do that, effectively and efficiently. I can share quickly key insights that answer and satisfy our country stakeholders by giving them many quality studies and primary research about competitive landscape beyond the outlook of our bank. It helps me be seen as an advisory partner and that makes a big difference. A big benefit of our subscription is that no one holds the whole data and because it allows so many people, so many different parts of our organisation have access, it enables all teams to have the same level of knowledge and decision support.

Head of Customer Insight and Research, Standard Chartered

“I know that I can always rely on Globaldata’s work when I’m searching for the right consumer and market insights. I use Globaldata insights to understand the changing market & consumer landscape and help create better taste & wellbeing solutions for our customers in food, beverage and healthcare industries.

Globaldata has the right data and the reports are of very high quality compared to your competitors. Globaldata not only has overall market sizes & consumer insights on food & beverages but also provides insights at the ingredient & flavour level. That is key for B2B companies like Givaudan. This way we understand our customers’ business and also gain insight to our unique industry”

Head of Consumer Sensory Insights, Givaudan

GlobalData provides a great range of information and reports on various sectors that is highly relevant, timely, easy to access and utilise.  The reports and data dashboards help engagement with clients; they provide valuable industry and market insights that can enrich client conversations and can help in the shaping of value propositions. Moreover, using GlobalData products has helped increase my knowledge of the finance sector, the players within it, and the general threats and opportunities.

I find the consumer surveys that are carried out to be extremely beneficial and not something I have seen anywhere else. They provided an insightful view of why and which consumers take (or don’t) particular financial products. This can help shape conversations with clients to ensure they make the right strategic decisions for their business.

One of the challenges I have found is that data in the payments space is often piecemeal. With GD all of the data I need is in one place, but it also comes with additional market reports that provide useful extra context and information. Having the ability to set-up alerts on relevant movements in the industry, be it competitors or customers, and have them emailed directly to me, ensures I get early sight of industry activity and don’t have to search for news.
