Fiat 500X - Benchmarked Connectivity Features
HMI
The 500X’s screen is one of the smallest in our test series. In addition, its appearance is deceptive because the screen’s surround is far larger than the display itself. The shortcut buttons have been digitized – making them harder to commit to muscle memory – and can, in some cases, be more distracting. Since the shortcut keys are used to launch each of the system’s features, there is no need for a ‘Home’ button, but this means no features can be viewed simultaneously, for example, the navigation and the audio choice, as is available in most models.
Voice Control
The Fiat 500X’s voice control system can be used to operate the navigation and limited audio choices. The function includes a ‘mic level’ icon in the top right to indicate whether it has heard. Sadly, there’s no text to indicate exactly what has been heard but, considering we scored the system top marks for natural use and four out of five for accuracy, the lack of visual feedback wasn’t as obvious an omission as some other models.
Telephony
Pairing a handset to the vehicle was incredibly easy and the system automatically imported the phone’s contacts once paired. The clarity of calls and usability of the telephony features was faultless.
Audio
Like many other car manufacturers, Fiat has been bold enough to wave goodbye to a CD player option. In lieu of this option, it’s provided as many other audio sources as possible, including an auxiliary port and two USB ports.
Networking
Somewhat inexplicably, UK-bound versions of the 500X ship without Android Auto and Apple CarPlay mirroring apps, which are available in the US.
Navigation
The screen’s limited size is exceptionally noticeable when trying to use the European-wide navigation, supplied by TomTom. The interface is mercifully simple – just as well considering there isn’t any room to add any more complications. It took six steps to set a destination and five to add a waypoint. Plus, the system automatically puts a space in postcodes – an issue that plagues a number of rival systems – and can cope with both street names and postcode inputs.
ADAS
The 500X’s advanced driver assistance system includes many expected safety technologies such as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). These sit alongside its adaptive cruise control, which is activated from the plethora of steering wheel controls. Despite the plentiful controls, their layout is fairly intuitive.
