High-Intensity Warfare
The conflict in Ukraine has resulted in Western countries sending existing weapons systems to Ukrainian forces, ranging from the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) to smaller man-portable systems such as Javelin. The war in Ukraine has been a strong driver for an increase in defense spending across the western world as militaries seek to upgrade existing systems that were not of use during the low-intensity wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Soldier Modernization
Efforts will be made to increase common standards between allied armed forces, in particular NATO. Increasing standardization will allow for joint procurement between countries as well as increased efficiency and effectiveness in joint military operations, while primarily leading to more affordable procurement. Due to the increased acquisition demand, dual-use systems and COTS technology (commercial off-the-shelf) will come into increasing demand to increase the development and production of new systems. Increased defense budgets and demand for more acquisitions will increase purchases, and due to overall budgetary limitations and timescales, the majority of countries will not develop their own systems from scratch and will seek to acquire widely used systems that have already reached the production stage.

Directed Energy Weapons
Increase in investment will continue, driven in large part by hypersonic advances and the proliferation of UAS/drone technology. Advances in hypersonic missile technology, as well as alleged use by Russia in Ukraine, will drive investment into DEW, which is seen as an effective way of targeting projectiles moving at hypersonic speeds. There will also be additional investment in countermeasures to combat the proliferation of DEWs as more countries seek to bring the technology to maturity. The US in particular has expressed concern about a lack of effective countermeasures to DEWs and is likely to pursue increased funding and research in 2023.
