The Situation
Our client needed a detailed analysis of sugar volume consumption trends from food, beverages and other grocery products sold in individual EU member states and for the EU in aggregate: this data and the insights provided fed into the company’s sales, marketing and strategic planning processes.
Our Solution
Using our proprietary methodology, which combines GlobalData Agribusiness’s (LMC International) analytical approach to the EU sugar market with GlobalData’s Consumer, Retail and Foodservice Intelligence Center’s (IC) data for application markets, we calculated the sugar volumes consumed in products containing the ingredient, on an annual basis from 2015 to date.

These products included:

* Food:  biscuits, cakes, tinned fruit, cereals, spreads, chocolate bars, sweets,  bakery   products, yoghurts, ice creams, desserts and puddings

* Soft Drinks: carbonates, energy drinks, enhanced water, flavored water, fruit powders, iced/RTD tea/coffee, nectars, sports drinks, squash/syrups, and still drinks.Outcome.Our methodology provided key insights into the following areas:

  • Sugar consumption trends:
    i
n EU countries… Germany, France, Poland, UK, Italy, Spain and others.
  • Sugar reduction trends and impact:
    – by major consuming companies…. Are they meeting their commitments?
    – by key channel and product type… To what extent does reformulation affect sugar use? Do rising sales of sugar-containing products offset lower incorporation rates?

Our methodology also allows us to reconcile country estimates of sugar production (top-down) with sales of sugar containing products by distribution channel (bottom-up) to accurately monitor sugar consumption trends.

How We Can Help You

“By including Indirect and Induced effects, our methodology can provide the global Agribusiness Industry with a comprehensive country-level analysis of its economic contribution to a country’s economy. The figures generated by this methodology are robust and defensible. Clients frequently commission updates of these studies as the results can easily be compared to previous years to show how economic impacts have changed. The methodology could be applied to other Agribusiness industries and crops such as the livestock sector or sugar crops. We also regularly undertake provincial and state analyses where required.“
