Our last update warned that time was running out for component makers before the introduction of US tariffs. The exact level of tariffs would depend on an individual country’s negotiations with the White House. The tariff level would also depend on staying on the right side of President Trump, because tariff levels are not set in stone. However, once a tariff deal has been sealed, component makers in that country should benefit. That is certainly the case for South Korea and Japan, which have both agreed a 15% tariff rate. In fact, when Japan, a key competitor to South Korea in the automotive and manufacturing industries, first agreed its 15% rate with the US, Seoul was very much under pressure to match the deal, rather than face a 25% levy. The 15% weighting is good news for Korean companies like LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and LG Display, as well as for Japanese companies Sony, Murata, TDK, Panasonic, Kyocera, Canon, Harmonic Drive, Nippon Ceramic, Japan Display, and Largan.
