Key Highlights
In October 2025, the bill-sharing app Splitwise expanded its partnership with the open-banking provider Tink to roll out its Pay by Bank feature in Austria, France, and Germany, following an earlier UK launch. Pay by Bank is an account-to-account payment method that enables users to authenticate and pay directly from their bank account without entering card details or navigating multiple redirects. Before the Tink integration, Splitwise users had to leave the app and manually make payments via their bank’s online banking app to settle balances. With Tink’s open-banking technology, users in these three countries can link their bank account and complete payments in a few clicks directly within Splitwise.
In July 2026, the ECB chose Raiffeisen Bank International and BAWAG as two of 36 PSPs from across the euro area to participate in its digital euro pilot, giving both Austrian banks a chance to trial the proposed digital currency ahead of any wider launch. The initiative, co-ordinated with the OeNB—one of 19 national central banks involved—is planned to run for 12 months starting in the second half of 2027. Raiffeisen Bank International plans to integrate the digital euro into its current payment products rather than create a standalone platform.
In January 2025, Bluecode partnered with the in‑car payment specialist ryd to enable digital payments at gas stations via the Bluecode-enabled app. To refuel, users simply select the station and pump in a Bluecode‑enabled app, confirm the amount, and pay within the app, the amount is then debited from their linked bank account. The solution removes the need to enter payment details at the terminal or to use cards or cash, speeding up transactions and reducing touchpoints. The service was launched initially at over 5,000 gas stations across Austria and Germany, including major networks, such as Aral, Esso, HEM, and bft.
