Key Highlights
Instant payments are gaining traction in the Czech Republic. To increase the adoption further, in November 2025, the Czech National Bank (Česká národní banka [CNB]) enabled instant payment transfers for public institutions—such as tax authorities, the Czech Social Security Administration, and health insurance providers—to receive payments instantly, including taxes, fees, insurance contributions, and other public charges, available seven days a week, including weekends and public holidays. On a similar note, cross-boarder instant payments are gaining traction. To capitalize on this, the CNB is also taking initiatives to link the Czech Express Real-Time Interbank Gross Settlement (CERTIS) instant payment system with other European instant payment systems and analyze cross-border interoperability, with banks being required to accept instant euro payments by January 2027 and sending payments across the EU by July 2027.
Innovative payments are being launched. For instance, in May 2025, the retail chain Albert introduced a terminal-free payment option in the Czech Republic. To use this method, customers install the Albert mobile app and activate the ‘pay via Cvak’ feature by linking it to their bank. When making a purchase, the payment is forwarded to the customer’s banking app for authorization and is completed as a bank transfer. The process provides direct, bank-linked settlement without reliance on conventional card-processing hardware.
The POS terminals in the country are gradually growing, with the growing preference of card payments among the Czech consumers for card payments. To capitalize on the growing adoption of POS terminals, payment companies are launching new, cost-effective terminals especially for SMEs. For instance, in February 2025, Komercni bank launched the Tap to Pay solution; allowing merchants to accept contactless payments using their iPhone or Android smartphone.
