Egypt is one of the leading producers of oil and gas in Africa. The country is currently the second-largest producer of natural gas in the continent following Algeria. It is also the fourth-largest holder of natural gas reserves in Africa. As of 2025, GlobalData database indicates that the country holds approximately 74 billion cubic feet (BCF) of recoverable gas reserves. Egypt also holds approximately 3.3 billion barrels of crude oil as of 2024. Egypt is home to the first oil discovery in the Middle East, made in 1886 in the Red Sea region. Egypt is now the only country in the Eastern Mediterranean with two LNG export terminals, located in Idku and Damietta, with a total capacity of 12 million tons per year (mtpa).
Egypt’s upstream industry faces an uncertain future as challenges continue to mount. Declining gas production has already halted LNG exports, and without significant new discoveries or investments, reliance on imports from Israel and floating LNG terminals is likely to grow. Meanwhile, falling crude oil output is set to deepen economic pressures, with rising debts to companies and operators discouraging much needed investment in production capacity. Geopolitical instability, particularly Red Sea security tensions affecting Suez Canal revenues, further complicates the outlook, increasing risks to Egypt’s economic stability.
