Progressive pulmonary fibrosis (PPF) is a distinct form of progressive and fibrotic disease, occurring in interstitial lung disease (ILD) cases other than in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). PPF is mostly defined by clinical symptoms, lung function, and chest imaging, irrespective of the underlying condition. PPF progression is monitored through a combination of pulmonary function tests such as forced vital capacity (FVC) and diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide, an assessment of symptoms, and computed tomography (CT) scans, along with regular follow-up (Kang and Song, 2023). PPF refers to progression in other ILDs, such as autoimmune ILDs, chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis, or unclassifiable ILD. The major signs and symptoms of PPF include worsening shortness of breath, increased cough, fatigue, and declining physical stamina (Podolanczuk and Fernández, 2024). Treatment involves managing the underlying ILD, utilizing antifibrotic medications, oxygen therapy, and pulmonary rehabilitation (Rajan et al., 2023).
In the 7MM, the number of the diagnosed prevalent cases of PPF is expected to increase by 15.23% over the forecast period at an annual growth rate (AGR) of 1.52% from 130,979 cases in 2025 to 150,925 cases by 2035. Of the 7MM, France is expected to have the highest AGR of 1.97%, with the diagnosed prevalent cases increasing to 7,819 cases by 2035. The UK is expected to have the lowest number of diagnosed prevalent cases of PPF in 2035, at 7,652 cases.
In 2035, the US will have the highest number of diagnosed prevalent cases of PPF in the 7MM with 88,431 cases, and the UK will have the fewest diagnosed prevalent cases of PPF with 7,652 cases. As the rates are held constant throughout the forecast period, GlobalData epidemiologists attribute the increase in diagnosed prevalent cases of PPF to the population dynamics in the 7MM.
Scope
This report provides an overview of the risk factors, comorbidities, and the global and historical epidemiological trends for PPF in the seven major markets (7MM: US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, and Japan). The report includes a 10-year epidemiology forecast for the diagnosed prevalent cases of PPF for ages 18 years and older. This epidemiology forecast for PPF is supported by data obtained from peer-reviewed articles and population-based studies. The forecast methodology was kept consistent across the 7MM to allow for a meaningful comparison of the forecast diagnosed prevalent cases of PPF across these markets.
