GlobalData expects Macau’s construction industry to contract by 5.4% in real terms, owing to rising inflationary pressures and increasing supply chain costs. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have further intensified these challenges. Following the conflict involving Iran, Asia, which accounts for 85% of Gulf crude shipments, experienced a sharp disruption in energy supplies, with the region’s oil imports plunging 30% year on year (YoY) in April 2026 to the lowest level since October 2015, after the near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This is resulting in an increase in energy, transportation, and material costs, which is expected to add pressure to construction project costs and margins. Reflecting these risks, in March 2026, Macau’s Secretary for Economy and Finance, Tai Kin Ip, warned that geopolitical conflicts and global instability are disrupting supply chains and slowing the global economic recovery.
Over the remainder of the forecast period, the construction industry is expected to register an annual average growth rate of 4.7% in real terms between 2027 and 2030, supported by investments in industrial, transport infrastructure, and energy projects. In April 2026, the Macau government renewed its electricity supply agreement with CEM (Companhia de Electricidade de Macau) until 2040 to support the development of the city’s energy infrastructure and low-carbon initiatives. The agreement aims to improve power supply systems, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and develop smart grid infrastructure. In addition, the government extended the contract for Macau’s Common Pipeline underground utility network in April 2026, supporting electricity, water, gas, telecommunications, and waste collection services until 2040.
