The Chile Media Landscape Report provides an overview of the television and telecommunications market in relation to sports broadcasting in Chile today, with top-level data and detailed forecasts of key indicators up to 2028. The report analyses the television, SVOD, mobile handset and residential fixed-line broadband sectors, as well as a review of major sports media rights.
Scope
By the end of 2023, there were 3.1 million pay-TV accounts in Chile, a decrease of 231,000 from 2022. IPTV will remain the leading technology to deliver pay-TV services in Chile during the forecast period. IPTV subscriptions will grow at a CAGR of 4.7% from 1.1 million in 2023 to just over 1.4 million in 2028.
Chile had an estimated 3.0 million subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) accounts at the end of 2023, an increase of 181,000 or 6.5% from 2022. After the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated SVOD growth in 2020 and 2021, it was inevitable that the growth in homes accessing SVOD services would slow.
Total mobile subscriptions in Chile reached 32.2 million in 2023. Over the next five years, total mobile subscriptions will grow at a CAGR of 1.0% with mobile network operators (MNOs) adding a combined 1.6 million subscriptions and bringing the country’s total mobile subscriptions to 33.7 million in 2028.
Total fixed broadband lines will increase from 4.5 million in 2023 to 5.5 million by 2028, supported by continued rise in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) subscriptions, on the back of initiatives by the government to further expand and upgrade fiber broadband connectivity in the country.
Key Highlights
IPTV subscriptions will grow at a robust CAGR of 8.4% over the forecast period, from 1.0 million in 2022 to 1.6 million in 2027, supported by wider availability of fiber infrastructure and growing demand for multiplay service bundles.
SVOD growth in the market is supported by the ongoing fixed broadband network expansion by telecommunication operators, leading to increased broadband adoption.
4G accounted for 73.2% of total mobile subscriptions in 2022 and will remain the main mobile technology over the forecast period. However, 4G market share will decline to 55.6% in 2027, as 5G service adoption increases.
Fiber was the leading residential broadband technology in 2022, with a 63.1% share of the total fixed broadband connections in the country. GlobalData expects fiber-optic fixed broadband service subscription share to increase to 80.2% in 2027, as the government and operators continue to invest in FTTX infrastructure.
