Distributed Generation in the Power Value Chain
Distributed power generation (DPG) refers to a variety of technologies that provide electricity at or near the point of consumption. This includes solar panels, battery energy storage, and combined heat and power (also known as co-generation). In such systems, multiple electricity generation sources and a microgrid are arranged in a local system serving a limited number of consumers. This system may be connected to the grid or can be independent of it. Such local systems may serve municipalities, college campuses, industrial facilities, military bases, and similar purposes. The same technologies can be deployed at a much smaller scale by individual consumers. Small-scale systems can also be connected to grids and feed any excess power back into the grid. In this situation, the operator is a prosumer—both a producer and a consumer of electricity.
