This report provides an overview of the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s Media Right landscape. It explores trends in media rights revenue, broadcasters breakdown by region, and the impact of different time zones.
GlobalData Sport estimates that the FIFA World Cup 2026 will generate $3.8 billion in main license media rights revenue, a 22.77% increase on the 2022 tournament ($3.094 billion). This would make it the largest-ever mega event by media rights revenue, ahead of the Olympic Games 2024 ($3.251 billion). FIFA’s main license media rights deals for the tournament cover 223 territories, making it a true global event. Competing nations from all six member confederations ensure worldwide interest in the event, as well as guaranteeing a large neutral audience for games.
Europe contributes the largest proportion of main license media rights revenue for the FIFA World Cup 2026 ($1.221 billion), followed by North American market buoyed by hosting bonuses ($1.109 billion). Revenue in both Asia & North Africa (-0.50%) and South & Central America (-17.55%) has dipped since the 2022 tournament but has climbed across the rest of the world (49.22%). Main license rights in the United States (Fox & Telemundo), Canada (Bell Media) and Mexico (Grupo Televisa) were awarded prior to being named hosts. In-built hosting bonuses take the total across the trio to $1.101 billion, a 486.95% on revenue generated by hosts Qatar in 2022 ($187.50 million as part of a pan-regional deal with beIN Sports).
The FIFA World Cup 2026 marks the debut of the new 48-team format, which bring a 62.5% increase in matches (from 64 to 104). The number of matches played by teams reaching the semi finals will increase from seven to eight. The increase in inventory – especially knockout fixtures – provides an opportunity for FIFA to earn higher media rights fees.
The failure of top soccer nations (Italy) and teams from major media markets (India & China) to qualify, coupled with the time difference making games trickier to watch in Europe, Africa, Asia & Oceania will likely prevent FIFA from reaching its budgeted media revenue target of $3.925 billion.
