Contactless payments are gaining prominence in the country. For example, in May 2023, KTEL intercity bus service, in collaboration with Visa and the payment company NBG Pay, introduced contactless payments on public buses across 33 cities in Greece. The system allows passengers to pay transit fares using cards, cell phones, and smartwatches by swiping on the ticket machines. Payment can be made by domestic or international cards. Similarly, in May 2024, the payment company Littelpay partnered with OASA to launch contactless payments across its entire transit network in Athens. This initiative begun with the implementation of contactless payment technology on the Athens Airport Express bus line; enabling riders to pay their fare by using a contactless bank card or mobile wallet.
According to a survey conducted by Payments Europe in May 2024, 91% of consumers in Greece used cards in the past year, compared to 86% who used cash. Additionally, 67% prefer using cards when paying with merchants, even when the option of cash is available. The report also reveals that when making digital payments in a physical store, 66% of consumers indicate a preference for cards. Furthermore, 68% of Greek consumers trust cards more than other payment methods and this number increases to 77% when traveling abroad.
In January 2023, QR code payments for ecommerce purchases via IRIS Payments were launched. Consumers can pay for online purchases directly from their bank account by scanning a QR code at a merchant’s online checkout. To increase usage, ecommerce platforms are offering installment payments. For instance, in June 2024, the ecommerce website Skroutz partnered with Klarna to offer the Instalments for All program.
