Key Highlights
In March 2026, Zengin-Net published Study Group on the Future Vision of the Payment System, outlining plans for a rebuilt New Payment System intended to eventually replace the current platform. The proposed system aims to deliver real-time payments with credit confirmation, improved user responsiveness, support for emerging payment types (such as phone number transfers, QR code-based payments, and Request to Pay), and stronger connectivity with international payment networks, targeting launch by 2030.
Transit-based digital wallets are expanding beyond transportation payments into everyday retail spending. In November 2025, East Japan Railway Company (JR East) announced teppay, a new QR code and barcode payment service that will be integrated into the Mobile Suica app from Autumn 2026. This integration will enable users to make QR code and barcode payments at participating merchants directly through the app. The update will also increase the stored-value balance limit, allowing Mobile Suica to be used for higher-value transactions beyond public transport and convenience stores. PASMO is expected to introduce a similar QR code payment capability in a later phase, strengthening the role of transit-linked digital wallets in Japan’s cashless payments ecosystem.
Contactless and QR code payments are expanding rapidly across Japan, driven by wider acceptance of tap-to-pay at retail outlets, restaurants, and small businesses. In September 2025, Stripe launched Stripe Terminal in Japan as part of its “Unified Commerce” strategy, enabling merchants to accept both PayPay QR code payments and Tap to Pay on iPhones—simplifying payment processing across online and physical stores
