GlobalData's " Safety Trends in Mining, 2025" provides a comprehensive coverage on the performance indicators of global mining industry. It provides historical and forecast data on fatalities, total recordable injury frequency rate, and lost-time injury frequency rate by company. The report also includes trends in investing in safety-related technology.
The average number of fatalities among the 54 miners studied in 2024 decreased to 3.1 from 4.3 in 2023. The decrease in fatality rates in 2024 was primarily due to decreased fatalities at ArcelorMittal and Impala Platinum. ArcelorMittal’s significant decline followed the sale of its Kazakhstan operations (Kostenko coal mine) in December 2023, following an explosion and fire that killed 46 miners. Meanwhile, Impala Platinum’s decline was due to the inclusion of significant safety reforms.
Top performers over the five years analyzed were Boliden, Northern Star Resources, and Minsur with zero fatalities. The worst performers were ArcelorMittal, Coal India and Sibanye-Stillwater with 142, 138 and 54 in total, respectively.
