Key Highlights
The introduction of contactless payments for public transportation is expected to increase the adoption of contactless cards. In February 2026, a pilot program was launched on the airport bus route between Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport and central Ljubljana, allowing passengers to purchase tickets onboard using contactless debit or credit cards, or mobile wallets. This initiative eliminates the need for cash or pre-purchased tickets. The goal is to make public transportation more accessible and efficient, while aligning Slovenia’s transport infrastructure with the growing preference towards digital payments.
The payment infrastructure in the country is growing rapidly. This growth was mainly supported by growing POS adoption among merchants. To capitalize its growing adoption, companies are launching tap-to-pay contactless solutions in the country. For instance, in March 2025, Apple introduced Tap-to-Pay on iPhone in nine European countries, including Slovenia. This solution allows merchants to convert their iPhones into POS terminals to accept contactless payments, without the need for any additional hardware or payment terminal.
To support small businesses and to promote local products, in March 2025, parcel delivery service DPD Slovenia – part of GeoPost which is Europe's parcel delivery network – launched Singular, an online shopping platform. This shopping platform targets SMEs offering products across fashion, handmade crafts, cosmetics, and local food and beverages.
