Key Highlights
On September 1, 2026, the digital ruble transitioned from its pilot phase and became available as a payment option at checkout in major retail chains and marketplaces. Consumers can now use it at Magnit, X5, Lenta, Ozon, Wildberries, and Yandex Market. According to the CBR, Russians conducted just over 50,000 digital ruble transactions in the first 10 days following its launch, as retailers quickly expanded support for this new payment method. Magnit has enabled digital ruble payments across all its store formats, including Azbuka Vkusa, Dixy, and Samberi. X5 and Lenta have rolled out acceptance of the digital ruble in all regions where they operate. The online platforms Ozon, Wildberries, and Yandex Market have integrated the digital ruble at checkout, with Ozon noting that the feature is initially operating in test mode.
Payment infrastructure providers are also introducing new alternative acceptance technologies. In May 2025, the NSPK launched Volna—a Bluetooth Low Energy-based payment system that facilitates contactless payments from smartphones on both Android and iOS, without the need for NFC. This technology enables POS terminals supporting Volna to accept payments from mobile devices via the BLE protocol. As of October 2025, the NSPK—in collaboration with the government bank PSB (formerly Promsvyazbank) and Russia’s housing development institution DOM.RF—integrated Volna into their mobile applications. Over 90% of PSB’s acquiring terminals have been upgraded to support this technology, marking an early-stage rollout of NFC-independent payment acceptance infrastructure in Russia.
In September 2026, Russia introduced the Universal Payment Code, allowing a single QR code to support multiple payment options, including SBP payments, the digital ruble, bank transfers, and participating commercial payment services. This development creates unified QR code-based acceptance infrastructure and reduces the need for merchants to display separate QR code stickers for different payment services.
