Critical munition reserve requirements are a reaction to Javelin and Stinger production woes, says GlobalData

Following the news that the National Defense Authorization Act will require the establishment of critical munition reserves and launch a scheme to track subcontractors involved in their production;Madeline Wild, Associate Defense Analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers her view:

“The inclusion of the new requirements shows a longer-term response to the ongoing concerns over the depletion of Javelin and Stinger stockpiles after transfers to Ukraine. Labor and material shortages, supply chain issues, and production lines that have been out of action for over a decade are just some of the problems that have restricted restocking timeframes for both platforms.

“The new legislation will go someway towards ensuring that the US permanently maintains a safe level of reserves of critical munitions by ensuring key subcomponents are procured, so that the accelerated production of any munition that becomes low in stock can be carried out. This should prevent issues that have been experienced by Raytheon, where key components of the Stinger system are no longer manufactured, as the Department of Defense have not ordered the platform in more than 18 years.”
