Amazon’s job postings for Project Kuiper and Freight nearly doubled in Q1 2022 indicating expansion, finds GlobalData

Amazon’s job postings for Project Kuiper (to launch low Earth orbit satellites) and Freight have nearly doubled from 580 in Q1 2021 compared to 1018 in Q1 2022, observes GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Sherla Sriprada, Business Fundamentals Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “From groceries, to healthcare, to satellites, Amazon has been expanding its platform in an increasingly complex transportation network. The ecommerce giant is looking at streamlining its supply chain via robotics innovation.”

The company has posted nearly 1,300 jobs with fulfilment centres as a keyword during March 2021 to March 2022. In Australia, Amazon is hiring for its first robotics fulfilment centre with roles including a ‘Graduate Area Manager, BWU2 – AR Sortable’ role, which involves looking at robotics sites across Australia to build state of the art fulfilment centres.

Amazon Freight is focused on developing a unique supply chain product offering to optimize cost-effective flow. Through its trucking network Amazon expects to achieve fast deliveries of freight goods despite congested ports. GlobalData found that customer retention seems to be key for Amazon as it looks to invest more in its delivery services, as poor shipping experiences are likely to impact it. The company is hiring for multiple roles and is looking to grow its trucking business. Amazon has also turned to air cargo for faster deliveries amidst supply chain disruptions. According to GlobalData’s Job Analytics Database, there is a nearly 100% year-on-year growth in job roles with freight as a keyword in Q1 2022.

Sriprada adds: “Amazon always seems to be ahead of the curve in terms of innovation. One example, is the Project Kuiper where it seeks to rival SpaceX for satellite internet services.”

The jobs posted for Project Kuiper rose by slightly over 50% in Q1 2022 over Q1 2021. The company is largely looking at hiring engineering related roles in Q1 2022.

Sriprada notes: “Amidst claims of workplace issues, Amazon is looking at hiring for Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) roles such as the company’s newly created role for a ‘Senior Ergonomist, Workplace Health & Safety – Human Factors & Ergonomics’ and a ‘Regional WHS Manager’ to support reliability and maintenance engineering. This suggests that Environmental Social Governance (ESG) continues to be on the radar for Amazon.”
