Barclays and Rothschild & Co top M&A financial advisers in retail sector in 2023

Barclays and Rothschild & Co were the top mergers and acquisitions (M&A) financial advisers in the retail sector during 2023 by value and volume, respectively according to the latest financial advisers league table by GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

An analysis of GlobalData’s Deals Database reveals that Barclays achieved its leading position in terms of value by advising on $14.6 billion worth of deals. Meanwhile, Rothschild & Co led in terms of volume by advising on a total of 19 deals.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Barclays saw a massive jump in the total value of deals advised by it in 2023 compared to the previous year. It was the only financial adviser to surpass $10 billion in total deal value during 2023. Apart from leading by value, Barclays also occupied the 10th position by volume during the year.

“Meanwhile, the number of deals advised by Rothschild & Co mostly remained at the same level and it fell short of just one deal to touch 20 deals volume mark in 2023. Apart from leading by volume, Rothschild & Co also occupied the fourth position by value.”

Goldman Sachs occupied the second position in terms of value, by advising on $9.5 billion worth of deals, followed by Morgan Stanley with $8.7 billion, Rothschild & Co with $7.1 billion and Jefferies with $7 billion.

Meanwhile, Lazard occupied the second position in terms of volume with 10 deals, followed by Houlihan Lokey with 10 deals, Goldman Sachs with nine deals and Jefferies with nine deals.
