A total of 48,953 deals (mergers & acquisitions (M&A), private equity and venture financing) were announced globally during January-November 2023, which is a year-on-year (YoY) decline of 23.6% compared to the announcement of 64,092 deals during the previous year, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

An analysis of GlobalData’s Financial Deals Database reveals that all the deal types under the coverage recorded considerable YoY decline during January-November 2023.

For instance, the number of M&A deals declined by 16.3% while the volume of private equity and venture financing deals registered YoY decline of 28.4% and 32.5%, respectively.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The prevailing macroeconomic challenges and ongoing geopolitical tensions in 2023 are significantly influencing sentiments in deal-making. This impact is observed uniformly across all regions and in most key markets.”

North America, which accounted for the highest number of deals among all the regions during January-November 2023, witnessed a YoY decline of 28.6%. Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa, and South and Central America too witnessed the deals volume decline by 19.4%, 18.8%, 25.7% and 30.6%, respectively.

Meanwhile, the US and China, which were the top two markets by deal volume during January-November 2023, registered 30.3% and 13.4% YoY decline, respectively. Similarly, the UK, India, Canada, Japan, Germany, Australia, France and South Korea witnessed deals volume decline by 14.6%, 26.3%, 11.5%, 15%, 18.6%, 20.6%, 18.3% and 28.1%, respectively.
