Jobs Recap April 2022: Job closures outweigh new job postings, reveals GlobalData

  • Active jobs down by 7% month-on-month in April 2022
  • Technology and retail sectors had the most active jobs

Active jobs globally witnessed a decline of 7% month-on-month in April 2022 as postings fell and closures rose. Technology themes – Cloud and Digitalization, had the most job closures, reveals GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Companies such as Accenture were looking at digital transformation opportunities, in the post-COVID-19 era, with the likes of metaverse driving digital customer experiences. GlobalData’s Job Analytics database identifies an iOS developer role for Accenture Plc’s new initiative Accenture Song (formerly Accenture Interactive).

Hiring around ‘cloud’ include Salesforce’s ‘Senior Director of Product Management, Commerce Cloud Solutions’ for platform tools and ISV solutions enhancing end-to-end Commerce Cloud offerings. VMWare is targeting multi-cloud space with ‘Director, Sovereign Cloud Solutions’ role for managing services for public clouds. and SAP is working on a ‘Government Marketplace’ using cloud hosting technologies through an ‘Industry Business Solutions Chief Expert Public Sector Cloud’.

Sherla Sriprada, Business Fundamentals Analyst at GlobalData, says: “In the retailing sector e-commerce related roles were trending, as companies look at enhanced digital customer experiences. Walgreens posted a Senior Director role for its omnichannel and ecommerce strategy. Customer engagement seems to be a focus area with the company hiring roles for ‘Director Product Management, Digital-Mobile App’ and ‘Director, Cloud Site Reliability Engineering’. Walmart also posted similar roles as a part of its e-commerce strategy and customer retention for the Walmart+ subscription service.”

Retail giant Amazon is facing issues in sourcing skilled labor in the US and Canada for warehouse operations and is planning to recruit graduating high school students. Amazon’s competitor Walmart is expected to create over 250 jobs through a grocery distribution centre in British Columbia, Canada. Walmart’s subsidiary Flipkart opened its largest fulfilment center in West Bengal, India, with employment for an estimated 11,000 people.

Sriprada concludes: “In contrast, companies in the UK such as Sainsbury Plc are planning job cuts. Over 2,000 jobs are likely to be impacted with Sainsbury planning to shut in-store cafes and another 300 jobs from support centers citing outsourcing to Accenture. Geopolitical tensions have forced Huawei and other major telecom players such as Nokia and Ericsson to suspend operations in Russia, impacting jobs.”
