Kirkland & Ellis and Vinson & Elkins were the top mergers and acquisitions (M&A) legal advisers in oil & gas sector for Q1-Q3 2022 by value and volume, respectively, according to the latest Legal Advisers League Table by GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
An analysis of GlobalData’s Financial Deals Database reveals that Kirkland & Ellis achieved the leading position by value by advising on $35.5 billion worth of deals. Meanwhile, Vinson & Elkins led by volume by advising on a total of 43 deals.
According to GlobalData’s report, ‘Global and Oil & Gas M&A Report Legal Adviser League Tables Q1-Q3 2022’, a total of 1,446 M&A deals worth $202.1 billion were announced in the sector during Q1-Q3 2022.
Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The competition for the top position by volume was tight as Vinson & Elkins and Kirkland & Ellis were the only advisers with more than 40 deals each during Q1-Q3 2022. While Vinson & Elkins led by volume, Kirkland & Ellis was just short of only one deal to secure the top spot.
“Kirkland & Ellis, which led by value, occupied the second position by volume with 42 deals. Vinson & Elkins, apart from leading by volume, also managed to occupy the second position by value by advising deals worth $33.3 billion.”

Latham & Watkins occupied the third position by value, by advising on $30.8 billion worth of deals, followed by Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, with $17 billion, and Baker Botts, with $14.9 billion.
Meanwhile, Latham & Watkins occupied the third position in terms of volume with 28 deals, followed by Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, with 18 deals, and Baker Botts, with 16 deals.
