While video game software developer Unity Software Inc. (Unity) saw an 104% rise in the number of total job openings since its initial public offering (IPO) debut—from 430 in September 2020 to 879 in February 2022*—the company is taking longer to close positions, according to GlobalData. The leading data and analytics company notes that the average number of days it has taken for the company to close jobs has increased from 40 days in 2020 to 53 days in 2022.
Sherla Sriprada, Business Fundamentals Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The longer recruitment process is likely a result of Unity’s push to diversify its partnerships beyond gaming. With collaborations with companies such as eBay and Hyundai Motors, Unity is expected to expand to new verticals such as automotive, construction and education. To extend its capabilities, the company will be needing a new intake of skilled specialists to deliver the expansion—for example, a January 2022 role for ‘Strategic Partnerships Manager, Cloud Marketplace’ shows that the company is moving to advance its software-as-a-service (SaaS) and subscription offerings to cloud marketplace platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure and Google Cloud.”

Globally, the company is hiring prominently for its digital twin business. A ‘Senior Strategic Business Development’ role in the UK shows the company is looking to close deals with digital twin companies. It is also hiring for its live entertainment and sports division, as well as looking for an experienced platform development professional for Xbox, PlayStation, iOS, Android and PC/Mac platforms.
Additionally, the company is scaling teams in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, exploring cloud marketplaces.
Sriprada adds: “Unity has posted a number of managerial positions, which suggest increased focus on the South Asia region. In South Korea, the company is identifying market opportunities to promote digital twin technology in the education and public sector. Meanwhile, for its Japan office, the company is hiring to meet the needs of a ‘high-profile’ manufacturing customer in the automotive and transportation space in its move implement a digital twin.”
The automotive sector appears to be a particular areas of focus, specifically to apply real-time 3D technology in China. Unity is also creating a new team in China to focus on human machine interfaces (HMIs) targeting the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) and film industries.
Daniel Clarke, Thematic Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “China’s automotive industry is looking promising. It is a country that has never been known for its cars, but now with the electric and autonomous vehicle revolution. China has companies that are leading the way when it comes to EV batteries and the autonomous driving technologies of the future.”
Sriprada concludes: “Unity seems to have an appetite for hiring but is finding it more difficult to find the required talent.”
