Weil, Gotshal & Manges and Fasken Martineau DuMoulin were the top mergers and acquisitions (M&A) legal advisers in the metals & mining sector during the first three quarters (Q1-Q3) of 2023 by value and volume, respectively, according to the latest legal advisers league table by GlobalData, which ranks legal advisers by the value and volume of M&A deals on which they advised.

Based on its Financial Deals Database, the leading data and analytics company reveals that Weil, Gotshal & Manges achieved the leading position in terms of value by advising on $20.4 billion worth of deals. Meanwhile, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin led in terms of volume by advising on a total of 18 deals.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Fasken Martineau DuMoulin was the top adviser by volume in Q1-Q3 2022 and also managed to retain the top spot by this metric in Q1-Q3 2023 as well. Interestingly, it was among the only two advisers with double-digit deal volume during Q1-Q3 2023.

“Meanwhile, Weil, Gotshal & Manges witnessed a significant jump in its ranking by value during Q1-Q3 2023. In fact, it was the only adviser to surpass $20 billion in total deal value during Q1-Q3 2023.”

An analysis of GlobalData’s Financial Deals Database reveals that KWM Service Limited occupied the second position in terms of value, by advising on $19.5 billion worth of deals, followed by  White & Case with $19.3 billion. Herbert Smith Freehills and King & Wood Mallesons jointly occupied the fourth position by value, with each of them advising on $19.1 billion worth of deals.

Meanwhile, Cassels Brock & Blackwell occupied the second position in terms of volume with 12 deals, followed by Bennett Jones with seven deals, Blake Cassels & Graydon with six deals, and Davis Polk & Wardwell with six deals.
