As the COVID-19 pandemic normalized frequent disease testing, people have become more proactive in monitoring their health, particularly in infectious diseases such as HIV, says GlobalData. The leading data and analytics company found that over 18.6 million HIV tests were sold to US hospitals in 2021.

Selena Yu, Medical Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “HIV test sales in the US have steadily increased in 2022 and this is expected to continue as individuals learn more about the importance of HIV testing. However, many HIV testing sites such as Planned Parenthood, sexual health clinics, and community health clinics are not covered by the US hospital tracking database. Therefore, the total US revenue for HIV tests* is estimated to be $829 million which equates to 37% of the total global revenue.”

Additionally, the HIV test market has recovered from the decreased market revenue observed in 2020. This was due to many health organizations decreasing public spending on HIV testing to compensate for increased COVID-19 testing.

Based on GlobalData’s US hospital tracking database, Abbott holds the largest market share in the US at 35.1% and Roche comes in second with 24.5%.

GlobalData’s HIV tests market model indicates that over 538 million HIV tests were sold globally in 2021 and almost 540 million will be sold in 2030*. The company predicts that the global HIV test market will reach $2.3 billion by 2030* growing at a CAGR of 1.5%.

Yu adds: “Many global groups such as the WHO and UN are bringing awareness to AIDS through campaigns, fundraising, and education to destigmatize HIV/AIDS. These efforts will continue to raise awareness of the condition and encourage more HIV testing globally.”
