Increasing government support for domestic manufacturing and a growing focus on reducing reliance on imported medical technologies are shaping the future of India’s medical devices industry. Against this backdrop, the medical devices market in India is projected to grow at a 6% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2025 and 2035, says GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform.

GlobalData’s research indicates that India’s medical devices market accounted for around 18% of the Asia-Pacific (APAC) market in 2025, reflecting the country’s growing importance within the regional healthcare technology landscape.

The Indian government is currently considering measures to accelerate local production of approximately 10 high-value medical devices, including MRI systems, pacemakers, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices, advanced ultrasound systems, and high-end diagnostic analyzers. The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to reduce import dependence and strengthen India’s medical technology manufacturing ecosystem.

Divya Soni, Medical Devices Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Demand for advanced healthcare solutions continues to increase as clinicians seek to improve diagnostic accuracy, disease management, and patient outcomes. As clinical practice becomes increasingly technology-driven, continued investment in innovation will remain important to meet the evolving needs of patients across India.”

The government’s move targets several technologically sophisticated device categories that currently depend heavily on overseas supply chains. Accelerating domestic production in these segments could help reduce import dependence in critical product areas while expanding local manufacturing capabilities.

Soni concludes: “The initiative highlights the strategic importance of expanding domestic capabilities in high-value medical device segments. As investment, infrastructure, and technical expertise continue to evolve, India is likely to play an increasingly important role in the APAC medical devices market while also supporting greater self-sufficiency across the sector.”
