South Korea’s medical device sector is set to see accelerated innovation following the government’s recent announcement of a major national investment initiative worth over KRW900 billion ($622.1 million) to advance next-generation medical devices. Against this backdrop, the South Korean medical device market is projected to grow at 5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) during 2024-34, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

According to the country’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the initiative is being advanced as a pan-government collaboration project and will prioritize technologies with strong clinical relevance and commercial potential. Key focus areas include AI-driven diagnostic tools, medical robotics, and next-generation implant systems, where Korea aims to strengthen its global competitiveness.

GlobalData’s research reveals that South Korea accounts for around 7% of the Asia-Pacific (APAC) medical device market in 2025, with major global players such as Siemens Healthineers AG, GE HealthCare Technologies Inc, Osstem Implant Co Ltd, Medtronic Plc, Abbott Laboratories, and Stryker Corp capturing a significant share of the country’s market.

Divya Soni, Medical Devices Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “South Korea has long been recognized for its manufacturing strength in medical devices, particularly in consumables and diagnostic equipment. However, the government’s targeted investment in advanced categories could mark a turning point, helping domestic manufacturers move up the value chain. By supporting R&D, clinical validation, and regulatory acceleration, the new initiative may position South Korea to compete in premium MedTech segments traditionally dominated by global players.”

The program is also expected to support smoother development and commercialization processes by enhancing resources for companies working on high-value, technology-driven solutions. Additionally, the initiative aims to strengthen South Korea’s standing in international markets by encouraging the development of export-ready, globally competitive medical devices.

Soni concludes: “By investing in transformative technologies and enabling smoother regulatory and commercialization pathways, South Korea is taking a strategic step toward redefining its role in the global medical device landscape. The initiative underscores South Korea’s long-term vision to advance precision medicine and innovation-driven healthcare delivery, while strengthening industrial competitiveness and establishing the country as a regional leader in advanced medical technologies across the APAC region.”
