Asia is set to lead the global butadiene industry capacity additions with a share of 75% by 2026, as it gains capacities from new-build and expansion projects between 2022 and 2026, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report ‘Butadiene Industry Installed Capacity and Capital Expenditure (CapEx) Forecast by Region and Countries including details of All Active Plants, Planned and Announced Projects, 2022-2026’ reveals that the total butadiene capacity of new-build and expansion projects in Asia is expected to reach 3.82 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) by 2026.The rapid industrialization and growing application of butadiene in rubber and automotive industry will lead to an increase in butadiene consumption.

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “In the upcoming new-build projects category, Asia is expected to see a capacity addition of 3.72 mtpa from 20 planned and announced projects, whereas from the expansion projects, it is anticipated to add a capacity of 0.10 mtpa from three planned and announced projects.”

India and China are the major countries in Asia in terms of butadiene capacity additions. The main capacity addition in India would be from an announced project, Reliance Industries Jamnagar Butadiene Plant with capacity of 0.70 mtpa.

Nivedita concludes: “In China, the major capacity addition is from two planned projects that include Exxon Mobil Corporation Huizhou Butadiene Plant, with a capacity 0.27 mtpa and Tangshan Xu Yang Petrochemical Tangshan Butadiene Plant, with 0.20 mtpa capacity.”
