Asia is likely to lead the global ammonia capacity additions with a capacity of 9.53 million tons per annum (mtpa) by 2026. In Asia, India accounts for more than half of the region’s capacity additions and it is expected to lead the global ammonia capacity additions among the countries, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s report, ‘ Global Ammonia Industry Outlook to 2026 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants’ reveals that Asia has 22 new- build and expansion projects with 9.32 mtpa from new build and 0.21 mtpa from expansion projects.

Vinuthna Bidar, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, says: “In India, 12 new-build and expansion projects are likely to start operations with a capacity of about 6.97 mtpa by 2026. Majority of the capacity additions are from Reliance Industries Jamnagar Ammonia Plant, with the capacity of 1.50 mtpa. It is expected to commence production of ammonia in 2025.”

GlobalData identifies Russia as the second highest country in terms of capacity additions with a capacity of 5.50 mtpa by 2026. Majority of the capacity additions will be from a planned project, EuroChem- Northwest Kingisepp Ammonia Plant 2, contributing 1.10 mtpa. It is expected to commence production of ammonia in 2023.

Iran will be the third highest country in terms of capacity additions with the capacity of 4.28 mtpa by 2026. Majority of the capacity additions will be from a planned project Hengam Petrochemical Company Assaluyeh Ammonia Plant, with the capacity of 0.73 mtpa and expected to come online in 2022.

Nakhodka Fertilizer Plant, Reliance Industries Ltd and Perdaman Industries Pty Ltd will be the top three companies globally in terms of planned and announced capacity additions over the outlook period.
