Asia is likely to lead the global chlorine capacity additions with a capacity of 4.03 million tons per annum (mtpa) by 2026. In Asia, China accounts for 48% of the region’s capacity additions and it is expected to lead the global chlorine capacity additions among the countries, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
GlobalData’s report, ‘ Global Chlorine Industry Outlook to 2026 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants 2021-2026’ reveals that Asia has 22 new- build and expansion projects with 2.50 mtpa from new build and 1.54 mtpa from expansion projects.
Vinuthna Bidar, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, says: “In China, five new-build and expansion projects are likely to start operations with a capacity of about 1.95 mtpa by 2026. Majority of the capacity additions are from Xinjiang Zhongtai Chemical Company Baicheng Chlorine Plant, with the capacity of 0.71 mtpa. It is expected to commence production of chlorine in 2023.”

GlobalData identifies India as the second highest country in terms of capacity additions with a capacity of 1.11 mtpa by 2026. Majority of the capacity additions will be from a planned project, GACL-NALCO Alkalies and Chemicals Dahej Chlorine Plant, contributing 0.23 mtpa. It is expected to commence production of chlorine in 2022.
The US will be the third highest country in terms of capacity additions with the capacity of 1.08 mtpa by 2026. Majority of the capacity additions will be from a planned project Shintech Plaquemine Chlorine Plant 3, with the capacity of 0.59 mtpa and expected to come online in 2022.
Xinjiang Zhongtai Chemical Co Ltd, Tianjin Bohai Chemical Industry Co Ltd and Shin-Etsu Chemical Co Ltd will be the top three companies globally in terms of planned and announced capacity additions over the outlook period.
