China to lead global acrylonitrile capacity additions through 2028, forecasts GlobalData

China is set to register the highest acrylonitrile capacity additions globally by 2028, contributing about 73% of the total capacity additions from seven new build projects, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, “Acrylonitrile Industry Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants to 2028,” reveals that China is likely to witness acrylonitrile capacity additions of 1.97 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) between 2024 and 2028.

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, Comments: “The acrylonitrile industry in China has been experiencing robust growth because of strong demand from the ABS industry, and continued growth of refining and chemicals sectors.”

In China, major capacity additions are from Zhejiang Petrochemical Daishan Acrylonitrile Plant 2, with a capacity of 0.66 mtpa. Zhejiang Petrochemical Co Ltd has a 100% stake in the plant and is also the operator of the project. Located in the state of Zhejiang, China, it is expected to commence production in 2026.

Jinneng Science & Technology Company Qingdao Acrylonitrile Plant, Shandong Yulong Petrochemical Longkou Acrylonitrile Plant, and Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical Quanzhou Acrylonitrile Plant follow next, with a capacity addition of 0.26 mtpa each. All three plants are expected to start operations in 2024.

Hengli Petrochemical New Material Dalian Acrylonitrile Plant is another project with the same capacity of 0.26 mtpa but is expected to start operations in 2025.
