China to spearhead global PTA capacity additions through 2028, says GlobalData

China is set to register the highest purified terephthalic acid (PTA) capacity additions globally by 2028, contributing about 57% of the total capacity additions from 10 upcoming projects, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, “Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Industry Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants to 2028” reveals that China is likely to witness PTA capacity additions of 22.40 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) during 2024 to 2028 from eight planned and two announced projects.

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, Comments: “The PTA industry in China is experiencing rapid growth due to its use in the production of polyester fiber, films, and resins, which in turn finds applications in industries such as packaging and textiles.”

In China, three major projects will contribute about 40% of the capacity additions by 2028. All these three projects have a capacity of 3 mtpa each. Guangxi Tongkun Petrochemical Qinzhou PTA Plant is one of these projects, completely owned and to be operated by Guangxi Tongkun Petrochemical Co Ltd. It is set to begin production in 2025 in the Guangxi province.

Fujian Fuhaichuang Petrochemical Zhangzhou PTA Plant is another project, 100% owned and to be operated by Fujian Fuhaichuang Petrochemical Co Ltd. Located in the Fujian province, it is also expected to commence operations in 2025.

The third project, Sinopec Yizheng Chemical Fibre Yizheng Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Plant 3, is expected to come online in 2024. Sinopec Yizheng Chemical Fibre Co Ltd will be the operator of this plant located in the Jiangsu province.
