The 2025 Open Championship, the 153rd edition of the golf tournament, was held from July 17 to 20 at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The tournament saw Scottie Scheffler achieve his inaugural Open victory and his fourth major title. The 2025 edition of the tournament attracted one new sponsor, Tourism Northern Ireland, which entered a one-year partnership with the tournament, owing its location at Royal Portrush Golf Club. Overall, the 2025 tournament secured agreements with 18 sponsorship partners, 17 of whom continued from the previous edition, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
GlobalData’s latest report, “Post Event Analysis – The Open 2025,” revealed that the 2025 Open generated an estimated media revenue of $111.87 million, with 28 broadcasters televising the event. The total prize fund for the 2025 edition of the tournament was $17 million.
Olivia Snooks, Sport Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Tourism Northern Ireland anticipates substantial economic and reputational benefits from its association with the prestigious event at Royal Portrush.”
NBC has acquired the rights to The Open in the US. The 12-year deal, which came into effect in 2017 and is set to expire in 2028, includes the British Senior Open, the British Amateur Championship, and the Walker Cup, the biennial amateur team contest that pits Great Britain and Ireland against the US, when held in the British Isles. Sky, the pay-TV operator, has acquired the rights in the UK and Ireland to golf’s British Open.
Snooks continues: “In the US, NBC’s coverage of the final round garnered an average of 4.1 million viewers, marking a 21% increase from 2024. The viewership peaked on Sunday 20th July with over 6.1 million viewers. In the UK, Sky Sports achieved its highest viewership for The Open to date, amassing 21.2 million hours of viewing—a substantial 36% increase compared to the previous year.”
Scheffler, the winner of the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, was awarded a total prize of $3.1 million (£2.3 million). The players who finished in the top three— Scheffler, runner-up Harris English, and third place, Chris Gotterup—each received over $1 million (£751,636) in prize money, while the top seven finishers secured a prize pool exceeding $500,000 (£375,637) each.
Snooks concludes: “Only 70 players made the cut for the final two days for the 2025 edition of The Open. It is important to note that prize money at The Open was only awarded to professional players. At the 2025 edition of the tournament, there was nine amateurs who competed in the tournament; however, none of them, made the cut, which resulted in the absence of a silver medal winner.”
