English Premier League international rights deal will cement league’s dominance, says GlobalData

Following the news that the English Premier League’s (EPL) international media rights are set to be worth more than the domestic rights for the first time;

Conrad Wiacek, Head of Sport Analysis at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view:

“The Premier League’s international media rights likely being worth more than the domestic rights for the first time will cement the league’s dominance. However, it also presents a problem for other European leagues.

“With the EPL’s international rights worth more than the entirety of La Liga’s rights, it creates an even greater disparity between English clubs and those on the continent. With the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus suffering financial hardship as a result of the pandemic, this news is unlikely to dissuade those clubs from continuing to pursue the Super League idea, which was suggested last year and hasn’t fully gone away.

“Additionally, the likes of Bayern Munich have long called for a wage salary cap to apply across European football as a means of levelling the playing field and limiting the potential financial might of EPL clubs, which will only be further enhanced with this news.”
