China’s rise as a biopharma innovator is reshaping global drug development, underpinned by regulatory reform and a rapidly deepening pipeline. Now accounting for one-fifth of drugs in development worldwide, China has overtaken Europe and moved beyond “me-too” models. Its growing strength across advanced biologics signals a structural shift global pharma can no longer ignore across research, development, and partnership strategies, says GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform.
GlobalData’s latest report, “The State of the Biopharmaceutical Industry 2026,” reveals that the US continues to lead global drug development, accounting for 40% of drugs in development worldwide. However, China has rapidly advanced over the last decade and now represents 20% of global drug development, surpassing the 5EU*, which accounts for 11%.
While the US maintains leadership in early-stage and preclinical innovation, China’s pipeline growth highlights its expanding role across development stages.
China has advanced across multiple therapy areas and modalities, including bi-specifics, monoclonal antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates, making it an increasingly attractive hub for innovative therapeutics. As a result, China has positioned itself as a key source of innovation for global biopharma companies.
Gaffar Aga, Strategic Intelligence Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “This represents years of regulatory initiatives, subsequently enabling China to continue advancing into a key source of credible innovation within the global pharmaceutical landscape.”
George El-Helou, Strategic Intelligence Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “China continues to transition from ‘me-too’ to a global innovator, redefining the global drug development landscape. Other markets must continue to monitor China’s pipeline assets to maintain global market share.”
Global pharmaceutical companies are increasingly pursuing partnerships, investments, and co-development opportunities with Chinese firms holding first-in-class assets.
Aga concludes: “As China’s pipeline continues to advance at speed, it is expected to play an increasingly influential role in shaping global drug development by the end of the decade.”
