Apple WatchOS 10 redesign offers more personalized user experience, but battery optimization remains key challenge, says GlobalData

Following the news that Apple has unveiled watchOS 10 with new widgets and redesigned apps at the much-anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023;

Ardit Ballhysa, Technology Analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view:

“Apple’s smartwatch operating system, WatchOS, has proven extremely successful over the last eight years since its debut in 2015. The company’s smartwatches have dominated the market for years. Its WatchOS user interface is smooth and reliable, its health and fitness features plus a swath of apps, along with stellar hardware and ecosystem integration, have contributed to its success.

“With WatchOS 10 ushering in the biggest redesign to the OS since its introduction in 2015 and new, unique health features, Apple is vying to further widen its market share lead against rivals owing to a few key changes.

“The new health and fitness features are great additions to the Apple Watch and will aid in continuing to give Apple the edge over rival smartwatch offerings. The vision health attribute boldly showcases Apple’s innovative approach to making the Apple Watch as relevant and useful to a user’s life as possible. It is unique, innovative features such as this that have earned Apple the smartwatch crown that it wears.

“However, the addition of more features on Watch OS will increase strain on the Apple Watch battery, particularly ones that use sensors, in terms of processing power and increased Apple Watch usage. Apple should use its industry-leading software and hardware optimization prowess to extend the battery life on its smartwatches to offset new features adversely impacting battery life.”
