Zoom’s latest round of enhancements to the Workplace platform raise productivity while sustaining its transformation as a competitor. They also provide Zoom with the challenge of drafting clear market messaging regarding security and positioning, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
Gregg Willsky, Principal Analyst, Enterprise Technology & Services at GlobalData, comments: “After its video meetings functionality became renowned virtually overnight in the dark, nascent days of the Covid-19 pandemic for its ability to facilitate communication and collaboration, Zoom began a steady evolution of its platform. That evolution took a steep trajectory upward with the October 2023 introduction of AI Companion and GenAI features. With the recent implementation of agentic AI capabilities, Zoom entered yet another chapter. Now, Zoom has taken an important step in that chapter by introducing integrations between Zoom and select competitor platforms as well as a roster of third-party apps.”
With the integrations, Zoom is converting the Workplace platform from an island of collaboration into a centralized hub connecting with external tools. With a critical mass of functionality available from within Zoom, the company is creating much stickier relationships with users and enabling them to get work accomplished much more rapidly. However, there are disadvantages to having extended functionality under one roof.
Willsky continues: “With Zoom Workplace now linking into other tools, the question of security becomes top of mind as it did a few years ago with incidents of ‘Zoom bombing’ where uninvited individuals disrupted Zoom meetings. Plus, the rapid accumulation of features on the platform over an abbreviated period has resulted in a mosaic of capabilities.”
Zoom needs to resurrect the strong security message it drafted after the ‘Zoom bombings’ and remind users what safeguards are present to reduce the chance of a major breach. In addition, Zoom needs to craft a clear ‘identity’ for its fragmented suite of tools and send an unambiguous positioning message to the market.
Willsky concludes: “By continuing to regularly augment the platform while drafting strong messaging regarding security and market positioning, Zoom will be poised to continue its ascent.”
