Key Highlights
The Banco Central do Brasil (BCB) is adding several new features to Pix to make it more widely used. In November 2024, it rolled out Pix by Proximity for Google Wallet users, enabling contactless payments at NFC-compatible terminals. In February 2025, it expanded this capability with tap-to-pay by allowing smartphone users to make contactless payments directly at POS terminals. Most recently, in June 2025, the bank launched Pix Automatico: a recurring payments function that lets users authorize automatic payments for bills, subscriptions, and other services with a single consent.
New entrants are reshaping Brazil’s ecommerce space, bringing fresh competition and accelerating the growth trajectory of its ecommerce market. TikTok launched TikTok Shop in Brazil in May 2025, which transformed the app into a full social commerce platform where users can discover and purchase products without leaving the video feed. The rollout included about 1,000 sellers—ranging from major retailers (such as C&A and Natura) to small businesses—and tools, such as shoppable videos, live commerce, branded storefronts, and an affiliate program to connect creators with sellers.
Contactless payments are increasingly being launched in public transport in Brazil, further driving their adoption. Effective from April 2026, the São Paulo Metropolitan Trains Company (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos) has fully implemented NFC-based, contactless fare payment across all 97 stations of its railway network. This measure benefits approximately 2.5 million daily commuters, who can now tap credit or debit cards—or use NFC-enabled smartphones and smartwatches—directly at station turnstiles to pay fares, eliminating the need for physical tickets or tokens. The system supports major payment brands, including Elo, Mastercard, and Visa.
